Senwes responded to the appeal by Agbiz to ensure food security amidst Covid-19, by launching the AVC Food Umbrella initiative in May which, together with agri-businesses and role-players in the value chain, are giving back to communities in which business is conducted. The objective of the initiative is to feed 5 million people, which is done by the distribution of 5kg bags of maize.
“An appeal is made to producers farming in communities which could benefit from this initiative, to donate a few tonnes of their harvest to this deserving matter", according to Francois Strydom, Senwes Group CEO.
How does the AVC Food Umbrella work?
When producers make donations to the AVC Food Umbrella-account, Senwes Grainlink's silos will receive, handle and store the maize. Grainovation, Senwes' logistics subsidiary, will transport the maize from the silo to the mill. The mills will mill and package the maize at no cost, after which Senwes will facilitate the distribution of the maize meal to old age homes, feeding schemes and farm schools.
How can I become involved?

Producers can donate as much maize as they wish, although the seed from Bayer will be limited to a maximum of 5 bags of DEKALB seed for 10 tonnes of maize donated per producer.
