The day also goes a long way in highlighting the absolute necessity of eradicating world hunger, as set out in the international Sustainable Development Goals (SDCs).
Given the theme of this year’s commemoration, “Grow, Nourish and Sustain,” communities across the world are called to rally around those most at risk of experiencing food insecurity. In light of this, and the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 rendition of World Food Day aims to shine the spotlight on the different role-players within the food value chain. These role-players are also referred to as food heroes.
Behind every plate of food we consume there is a multitude of people who planted, harvested, produced or transported it. In short, a value chain representative of individuals and businesses who, no matter the circumstances, work tirelessly to provide food to their communities and beyond.
Senwes plays a vital role in this value chain and prides itself on making an impact from the farm gate to the mill door. This is done by being an active participant in the strive to find a sustainable solution to food insecurity and is facilitated through a customer-oriented approach that speaks of innovation and adaptation.
This approach is twofold. Not only does the service offering and value proposition of the company enable producers to achieve success, it also propels the company towards impactful involvement in communities across its demographical footprint. An example of such involvement is the AVC Food Umbrella Project, through which more than 470 tons of maize have been collected to help relief hunger during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Ultimately, the ACV Food Umbrella can be labelled as ‘food from a farmer’ and sees the coming together of primary producers, agri-businesses, logistics companies, processors and distribution centres, working towards the common goal of reaching out to communities destabilised by the effects of the pandemic.
Senwes launched the project in May with a donation which saw 14 000 5kg bags of maize meal being handed out to communities in need. To date vulnerable communities in Allanridge, Bloemfontein, Bothaville, Bultfontein, Fochville, Hartbeesfontein, Heilbron, Hennenman, Hoopstad, Klerksdorp, Koppies, Kroonstad, Leeudoringstad, Makwassie, Odendaalsrus, Orkney, Ottosdal, Parys, Potchefstroom, Sasolburg, Stilfontein, Ventersburg, Ventersdorp, Viljoenskroon, Virginia, Vredefort, Welkom, Wesselsbron, Witpoort, and Wolmaransstad have benefitted from the project. Donations have also been made to several charitable organisations in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal.
